Golden Years, Golden Care: Navigating the Complexities of Care for Older Adults

Pharmacist Learning Objectives

1. Discuss common health concerns and chronic conditions experienced by older adults.
2. Identify medications that should be avoided or used with caution in the geriatric population.
3. Describe the pharmacist’s role in supporting older adults and their caregivers by utilizing targeted resources to improve care outcomes.
4. Outline strategies to support communication with older adults facing vision, hearing, or language barriers to improve understanding and care.
5. Design a care plan that incorporates recommended practices for medication management in an older adult, addressing adherence, safety, and caregiver support.

Technician Learning Objectives

1. Identify common health concerns and conditions affecting older adults encountered in pharmacy practice.
2. Discuss medications that may require special handling or attention when dispensing to older adults.
3. List selected resources for older adults and caregivers.
4. Describe specific ways pharmacy technicians can enhance communication with older adults and their caregivers to support optimal care.
5. Demonstrate how to organize medication regimens and support adherence for older adults under pharmacist supervision.

Meet Your Speaker

Trista Askins Bailey, PharmD, BCPS, BCGP, FASCP
Associate Professor
Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Pharmacy

Dr. Trista Askins Bailey is an Associate Professor and Division Head for the Geriatrics/Pediatrics Division in the Department of Pharmacy at the Jerry H. Hodge Texas Tech University School of Pharmacy. In addition to her teaching, she has a practice site as a long-term care consultant pharmacist for nursing homes and assisted living facilities in Abilene, Texas. Dr. Bailey received her Bachelors of Science with Honors from Texas Tech University in 2007 and her Doctorate of Pharmacy from The University of Texas at Austin/The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio dual degree program in 2011. She then went on to complete an ASHP-accredited PGY-1 ambulatory care/geriatrics focused residency with the Battle Creek VA Medical Center in Battle Creek, Michigan. She is dual board certified in both Pharmacotherapy (BCPS) and Geriatrics (BCGP) and is a fellow of the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists. Outside of pharmacy, Trista likes to walk her dog, drive her 3 children to their extracurricular activities, and is always up to listen to a good true crime podcast.

Shortly after both the exam and evaluation are successfully completed and submitted, the CPE Statement of Credit can be accessed on CPE Monitor at www.MyCPEMonitor.net.

*CEimpact provides two (2) opportunities to complete the exam. The learner will not receive CPE credit after two failed attempts.
