Paws and Reflect: Recommended Practices fur Dispensing Veterinary Prescriptions

Pharmacist Learning Objectives

1. Examine the unique aspects of veterinary prescriptions and their differences from human prescriptions.
2. Discuss recommended practices for accurately dispensing veterinary medications in a community pharmacy.
3. Identify commonly dispensed veterinary medications and their key pharmacological considerations.
4. Recognize opportunities for reducing and preventing medication errors when handling veterinary
prescriptions.
5. Develop a communication strategy to counsel pet owners on the proper administration and storage of veterinary medications.

Technician Learning Objectives

1. List commonly dispensed veterinary medications and their corresponding formulations.
2. Explain the proper procedures for handling and labeling veterinary prescriptions.
3. Describe how pharmacy technicians can assist in customer interactions related to veterinary medications.
4. Discuss recommended practices for managing the inventory of veterinary-specific medications.
5. Demonstrate how to support pharmacist-led counseling by providing pet owners with accurate supplemental information on the administration and storage of veterinary medications.

Meet Your Speaker

Sidney Robertson, PharmD, DICVP, MBA

Dr. Sidney Robertson is a veterinary pharmacist who graduated from the SIUE School of Pharmacy and the School of Business in 2021. After earning her PharmD and MBA, Sidney went on to secure a veterinary pharmacy residency at Purdue University Veterinary Hospital, where she spent time broadening her pharmacy knowledge in the animal sector. Being raised with animals and riding horses in rodeo, Dr. Sidney enjoys being involved in veterinary pharmacy and animal health at Tennessee Equine Hospital.
